A Crocheter's Yarn Cabinet: My Tried-and-True Favorites

As a crocheter, I’ve had my fair share of adventures with different yarns—some smooth and silky, others a little more challenging. When it comes to my graph patterns, I almost always reach for Premier Basix Yarns because, as of this writing, there are 98 different colors to choose from! The variety makes it easy to find the perfect shades for detailed designs.

That said, sometimes it’s fun to experiment with other yarns! This blog is all about the ones I’ve tried and loved. I won’t be sharing any I didn’t enjoy because I believe in keeping things positive and focusing on what works. Whether you’re looking for something soft and squishy for your next project or a sturdy yarn that holds up beautifully, I hope my favorites inspire your creations.

Let’s dive into the yarn cabinet! 🧶✨

Soft, Squishy, and Surprisingly Easy to Work With: My Soho Skwishy Yarn Review

I recently got my hands on Soho Skwishy yarn from Herrschners, and let me tell you, it lives up to its name! This 100% polyester, chenille-style yarn is as soft as it looks and made for ultimate coziness. This was my first time working with a yarn like this, so there was a bit of a learning curve, but the end result? Totally worth it.

First Impressions

Right out of the package, Skwishy is ultra-soft and plush, and you just want to squish it. The texture is thick but airy, and the chenille-style fibers make it feel velvety smooth. It comes in a variety of colors, which is awesome for mixing and matching, and it's machine washable, which means you don’t have to worry about it getting dirty.

Learning Curve

Since this was my first time using a chenille-style yarn, I was expecting it to be tricky. Sometimes, yarns like this can snag or make it hard to see stitches. But honestly, it wasn’t as hard to crochet with as I thought it would be. The yarn worked up smoothly, and once I got into a rhythm, it was actually pretty easy to handle. The trick is to use a larger hook size and keep a looser tension so the stitches don’t disappear into the plushness.

The Project: A Cozy Hat for My Mom

For my first Skwishy project, I made a striped beanie with a pom-pom, and it turned out so cute! The texture of the yarn made it extra soft and luxurious, and the snap-on pom was a fun little bonus. No sewing on pom-poms? Yes, please!

My mom, who is a little frail, absolutely loves it. She said the hat feels like heaven on her head, and that made my day. It’s warm without being heavy, and the stretchiness makes it super comfortable to wear. If you’re looking for a gift-worthy yarn that’s crazy soft and cozy, Skwishy is a great choice.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve never worked with a chenille-style yarn before, don’t be scared! Soho Skwishy is soft, forgiving, and way easier to work with than I expected. The coziness is next-level, and I can see it being perfect for blankets, plush toys, scarves, and other cozy projects. Plus, it’s machine washable, which makes it even better.

Yarn Review: Herrschners Worsted 8 in Prism

For these cozy slippers, I used Herrschners Worsted 8 Yarn in the color PRISM, and I have to say, it was a great yarn to work with! This worsted-weight acrylic yarn is smooth, easy to crochet with, and holds its shape well—perfect for a snug, comfy fit.

One of my favorite things about Herrschners yarn is their Easy-Pull tab, which makes starting a project hassle-free (no more digging around the skein for the end!). With 489 yards per skein, I still have plenty left over, making it a great value for the price.

This yarn is soft, durable, and machine washable, so it's a solid choice for slippers, afghans, and other everyday crochet projects. The self-striping colorway in PRISM created a beautiful mix of blues, greens, and warm tones that made these slippers extra fun to work up.

Would I use it again? Absolutely. If you're looking for a budget-friendly acrylic yarn with vibrant color options, this one is definitely worth trying!

🧶 Not Just for Afghans! 🧶

Meet my husband Bob, he helps me with designing patterns, keeps me sane when my yarn stash gets out of control, and occasionally becomes my crochet model whether he likes it or not. 😂 Here he is in a candy cane-inspired long hat made with Premier Basix in Garnet and Hazel, proving that this yarn isn’t just for afghans!

This hat was actually made for our family’s white elephant exchange, and I was absolutely thrilled when my future son-in-law "stole" it from someone else! Now if I could just get him to model it... 🤔😂

Basix is my go-to for graph patterns because of the color variety, but it also works up beautifully for projects like this—soft, sturdy, and perfect for something fun. And yes, that pom-pom was necessary. 🎄

This isn’t my pattern—I used the Ethan’s Pom Pom Hat pattern, which you can find below, along with the Premier Basix yarn I used!
